Chemical peels offer a quick and affordable way to improve skin texture, fine lines, hyperpigmentation, and many forms of acne. They work via a chemical solution that causes targeted skin to peel.
At Nua, we use the Perfect 10 Chemical Peels, all five step procedures that cater to different skin types and purposes.
Through exfoliation and peeling, Perfect 10 peels force stubborn cells to produce collagen and hyaluronic acid, two essential ingredients in the promotion of plumping and revitalization of the skin. Peeling also helps to get rid of melasma, the dark pigmentation that often appears after the skin is damaged by the sun, aging, pregnancy, and other hormonal changes.
Chemical peels, fortunately, don’t require too much preparation. Make sure you don’t apply facial make-up that will be difficult to remove with a gentle facial cleanser or wipe prior to your procedure. Be sure to inform your provider beforehand if you have a history of cold-sores or sensitivities/allergies to products.
Before your procedure, your face will be gently cleansed to remove any makeup, oil, and dirt. The chemical peel is then allowed to rest on the skin for 5 minutes before being neutralized. Once this is done, it is gently removed and a solution is applied to the skin for four hours. You can continue throughout your day as usual with this solution on the skin. Once the four hours are completed, you will remove the solution with the products and instructions that will be given to you before you leave the spa.
You may experience some irritation of the skin after your procedure. The skin of the face will become flaky and begin to peel, and you must do your best to avoid picking off skin in the days following the treatment. Peeling typically lasts 3-5 days after the treatment. It is important to apply a gentle, moisturizing solution to the face afterwards. Talk to your provider about what she recommends.
While the name “chemical peel” sounds daunting, the Perfect 10 Peel is considered by most to be painless. You may notice a very mild warm, tingling sensation within the five minutes that the peel is applied, which can be neutralized if needed.
Most importantly, do not pick off the peeling skin after a chemical peel. Be patient. It is important to only use gentle, non-comedogenic products on your face for the week following the peel. In addition, the skin should be diligently protected from the sun with sunscreen and wide-brimmed hats. Detailed aftercare instructions will be given to you after the procedure that you can refer to at any time.
