Injectable fillers offer quick and easy ways to reduce the signs of aging and to enhance your appearance. Our board-certified dermatologists and physician assistant are experts in all techniques of injecting dermal fillers, and they use a wide range of the fillers available on the market to subtly and artfully reduce the appearance of the signs of aging: volume loss, wrinkles, facial folds, thinning skin. There are multiple kinds of dermal filler, each individually suited to a different goal and area of the face. Some fillers offer immediate results; others work with your underlying collagen to slower, longer term, and longer lasting results.
Juvederm Ultra XC, Juvederm Ultra Plus XC, Voluma XC, and Vollure.
As we age, our skin changes. Over time, the natural volume of youthful skin begins to diminish as wrinkles and folds form. But, with the JUVÉDERM® lines of fillers you don’t have to just sit back and let it happen. JUVÉDERM® is a smooth consistency gel made of hyaluronic acid – a naturally occurring substance in your skin that helps to add volume and hydration. Our providers can inject JUVÉDERM® under the skin, instantly restoring your skin’s volume and smoothing away facial wrinkles and folds, like your “smile lines” or “parentheses” (nasolabial folds – the creases that run from the bottom of your nose to the corners of your mouth).
JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC: There has been a paradigm shift of sorts in the world of facial aesthetics. The “old” way of simply using fillers to efface wrinkles and folds is really just a two-dimensional approach to a 3 dimensional problem. We find ourselves treating the “effects” of the aging process instead of addressing the “cause” of the visual changes we see. The most prominent area of volume loss is in the mid-face, or cheek area. Voluma XC is FDA-approved to improve volume loss in that area without invasive surgery.
Restylane, Restylane Lyft, Restylane Silk, Refyne, Defyne
Restylane is a crystal-clear, non-animal, biodegradable gel based on a natural substance, hyaluronic acid. The result is instantaneous and produces a long-lasting, natural enhancement, gentle and safe to your skin. No test required. Treat unwanted facial wrinkles, lines and scars and replenish your skin’s collagen layer to smooth lines, wrinkles and add definition. The addition of 0.3% Lidocaine to Restylane was approved in January 2010 by the FDA. Patients will appreciate the timesaving involved when numbing prior to the filler injection may no longer be necessary.
Since 2005, RADIESSE® has been used for cosmetic purposes and was the first soft tissue filler that was heavy enough to elevate deep tissue and thus help with volume loss under the eye, in the cheeks, and in the jowl area. Made from calcium hydroxylapatite— a naturally occurring compound in the body used in cleft palate repair in children for many years— Radiesse works on two levels. When it is initially injected, it works to automatically add more volume to the area but it also works to encourage your body’s natural production of collagen— which helps make the results last longer than other fillers before it. The average longevity is 18 months. Its biggest drawback is its lack of reversibility.
Sculptra® Aesthetic (injectable poly-L-lactic acid) is FDA-approved for treatment of facial collagen loss, a natural consequence of aging. With other fillers, lines and wrinkles are filled in for more immediate results. Sculptra®Aesthetic results are less immediately obvious than with hyaluronic acid fillers, and over time, Sculptra works with your own body to to create gradual results that continue to improve and can last up to 2 or more years. Studies show that best results are achieved after 3 treatments, 1-2 months apart.
Belotero Balance® is a slightly thinner filler that integrates well into your skin, making it suitable for the more delicate areas, such as vertical lip lines, and, off-label, to fill in the sunken under-eye tear trough area without creating the Tyndall effect, a bluish discoloration that can occur in that skin area that can occur with other fillers used there. Results last about six months, though some patients report a longer time.
RHA Collection ®
The RHA Collection is Resilient Hyaluronic Acid, dermal filler designed for facial dynamics and represents the lates advancement in hyaluronic acid (HA) technology in more than a decade, using a gentle manufacturing process to more closely resemble the natural HA in the skin. The RHA Collection is the first and only FDA-approved hyaluronic acid fillers for dynamic wrinkles and folds and includes three approved formulas: RHA 2, RHA 3, and RHA 4.
Dermal fillers work by adding volume in areas where there has been volume loss. There are multiple mechanisms through which fillers can do this. Those that are hyaluronic acid-based draw and bind water to themselves, resulting in a fuller, more naturally youthful appearance. Others – like Radiesse and Sculptra – work by creating a ‘scaffolding’ for your body to build collagen on where it has been lost with time.
If you are interested in the mechanisms of individual fillers, please ask us at your appointment.
Please let us know if you have ever had any injectable medication before or any other procedure to treat wrinkles. Also, please let us know if you have a history of cold sores or have ever had an adverse reaction to dermal fillers, injectable botulism or similar treatments in the past. We may suggest medications prior and after treatment for optimal healing.
Avoid wearing any make-up, and most importantly, any that would be difficult to remove with a wipe. Come with a clean face, This reduces risk of post-procedure infection.
Before your procedure, we will gently clean and prep the area to be treated. Because dermal filler injections can be uncomfortable, you should consider whether you would like topical or injectable numbing prior to the appointment. There are multiple kinds of numbing that can be used for dermal fillers and we will discuss different options with you at your consultation appointment. After numbing, we will remove any topical numbing cream, clean and prep your skin again, and perform the injection.
After your procedure, you may have some bruising and redness in the areas injected. With most fillers, people see results immediately after their treatment. It is common to experience swelling after the procedure, so you may notice more fullness than desired in the week following your treatment. This is very common and typically fades within 10 days. It is fine to cover up bruising with make-up. We will give you in-depth aftercare instructions at your appointment and are available to answer any questions as needed.
The amount of time that dermal fillers last varies with the type of filler and where it is being injected.
Many patients find dermal filler injections uncomfortable but bearable without topical numbing, although this varies greatly with the area being injected and the individual’s pain tolerance. We will typically recommended that topical numbing or a numbing block be placed prior to your first procedure, and will discuss this with you at your consultation appointment.
It is okay to shower or bathe normally after your dermal filler injections. You can apply ice packs to ease swelling and bruising. We will give you in-depth aftercare instructions at your appointment and are available to answer any questions as needed.
